Highland Plaza Shopping Center and Publix, Anchors for The East Cobb Community.
Publix at Highland Plaza, Marietta, Ga, 3605 Sandy Plains Road, 30066
The Highland Plaza shopping center, located at the corner of Sandy Plains Road and Shallowford Road, is an anchor for the Easy Cobb community. The shopping center was constructed in 1992 as a retail shopping center. The shopping center includes a mix of anchor tenants, including Home Depot, Paradise Grill and Publix. The development’s timing in the early 1990s coincided with the growth in suburban retail in the greater Marietta and East Cobb Sandy Plains Road area.
Publix is one of the original tenants from opening of the shopping complex in 1992. Publix refers to this location as Publix — Highland Plaza store #33. At this anchor community store you can find local students from Pope and Lassiter High Schools hanging out in the food dining area and the attached Starbucks Coffee shop. A notable milestone tied to this store is that this is where the chain introduced its “Pub Sub” concept. The Highland Plaza store was the first to customized Sub sandwiches, known as the Pub Sub. The Publix chain was first established in Florida. The first Publix outside of Florida was in Savannah in November 1991, and then expanded into the Marietta region in 1992.
What Makes Publix Store #33 special is that it was among the first Publix stores in Cobb County and helped cement Publix’s presence in the northern suburbs of Atlanta. The Publix at Highland Plaza store offers delivery, curbside pickup, and a pharmacy. The Highland Plaza shopping center and the region of Sandy Plains Road and Shallowford Road has become a strong anchor for the East Cobb community.
